The Umbrella Refugee Committee is actively committed to improving refugees’ protection at the policy-making level.
The CGRS, also known by its French acronym CGRA and Flemish acronym CGVS, is the Belgian official institution responsible for granting protection and issuing documents to forcibly displaced migrants, thus carrying a significant responsibility for refugees’ lives.
The first example of this commitment was our participation hosted by the CGRS in 24 June 2024. During this event, the CGRS invited our representatives from the Umbrella Refugee Committee to share their experiences and exchange views with the audience, which also featured members from the UN Refugee Agency.
Through this engagement, we contributed to the CGRS’s aim to enhance protection for those in need by providing objective information about the conditions that refugees are experiencing.

A second instance of collaboration took place on 14 March 2025. During the session, a representative from the CGRS delivered a presentation on the role of the organisation in the asylum procedure. Refugee leaders posed key questions on behalf of their communities with the aim to spread accurate and timely information.
This meeting paved the way for a joint effort to clarify and resolve misconceptions.
